Riding Trails

Jousting Tournaments
The Maryland Jousting Tournament Association (MJTA) hosts jousting tournaments throughout the state. Two sites in Southern Maryland have regularly scheduled jousting tournaments open to the public. A tournament is held at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds on the third weekend in September, and at Christ Church in Port Republic on the last Saturday in August each year. The Maryland state schedule and contact information can be found on the MJTA website.
Sanctioned Fox Hunt in Southern Maryland
De La Brooke Foxhounds W has hosted MOFA-sanctioned fox chasing events in Southern Maryland for more than 80 years. Members participate in year-round activities including hound shows, trail rides, hound walking, a Hunt Ball, hunter paces and more. Guests are welcome by invitation. Find out more at the DLB website.
Horse Discovery Centers
Designated by the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB), Discovery Centers are carefully selected, licensed stables that welcome people of all ages and experience levels into their barns to learn about horses in a friendly and knowledgeable environment. Trails Riding Stables and Guided Trail Rides
The Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) has created Saddle Up, Maryland, a brochure listing riding stables and guided trail rides throughout the state (listed by region). Click here to see the PDF.
Horse Racing
It is still possible to see live horse racing in Southern Maryland. Thoroughbred racing is featured at Laurel Park, and harness racing, where horses race at a trot pace pulling a cart and driver, is featured at Rosecroft Raceway.
Horse Shows
The Show Place Arena at the Prince George’s County Equestrian Center hosts various horse shows throughout the year. Generally, equestrian events are free for spectators unless otherwise noted, but tickets may be required. See details at the website.
